I found The Other Side of Tenderness to be a gripping and unapologetically intense story that blends passion, danger, and emotional vulnerability against the backdrop of high-stakes casino life. Diane M. Zimmerman writes with a clear insider’s eye—her knowledge of the gambling industry and Mafia culture gives the book a level of authenticity that draws you in and doesn’t let go.
Nick Rusano, the powerful casino owner with Mafia ties, is both magnetic and infuriating—he’s a man shaped by loyalty, danger, and privilege, but also one who finds himself unexpectedly undone by Alaina McGovern, a small-town nurse with a good heart and an unwillingness to be intimidated. Their chemistry feels raw and believable, yet what really hooked me was the undercurrent of moral tension: in a world where power and survival come first, what does it mean to truly protect someone you care about?
Zimmerman doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of her story. Violence, betrayal, and loss are woven into the romance, making this far more than a simple love story. This one has it all! Romance, mystery, and murder!
For far too long the publishing world has been sadly lacking an authentic Mafia novel but now Ms. Zimmerman sets the pages on fire in this sizzling and raw Mafia romance. She takes us behind the scenes into the inner sanctum of a Las Vegas casino introducing us to Nick Rusano, a suave but jaded Mafia boss who relishes his playboy lifestyle. Nick fights a daily battle of dishonest dealers, drunken tourists and cheating scams many of which are detailed in the text. Danger is also lurking in the shadows as he hunts for a vicious serial killer.
He is determined to fight his desire for Alaina, our lead female, knowing the danger of letting her into his world. This causes the reader to experience a gamut of emotions. I slammed down the book in anger one moment then shed a tear on the following page. No need to worry, the author guarantees a HEA.
The characters are well developed, and both grow throughout. The antagonist is craftily hidden, and I was clueless until the end. For fans of the Godfather, Boardwalk Empire, and Casino this novel fulfills your hunger and for those dark mafia fans, you will NOT be disappointed.

The writer immediately drew me into this story about a sweet woman who falls in love with a Mafia member. I was immediately drawn into the Mafia underworld right along with the heroine, Alaina.
In each chapter I anticipated what might become of the characters, and quite honestly, I had a hard time putting the book down. Full of intrigue, mystery and romance, this story stayed in my thoughts for quite some time. There are so many interesting characters in this book, and I hope the writer will have a sequel soon. I can envision this story as a future movie or television miniseries! I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased several copies for my friends.
